Word & Character Counter
Count words, Unicode characters, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and reading time locally in your browser.
Paste text to count words, Unicode characters, whitespace-free characters, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and estimated reading time. Everything runs locally in your browser.
How it works
The counter reports Unicode character totals, a whitespace-free character total, words, sentences, non-empty paragraphs, line count, and estimated reading time.
Word and sentence counts are practical writing estimates, not editorial proofing rules. Unicode letters and numbers count as words, apostrophes can stay inside words, and the hyphen option controls whether terms such as browser-local count as one word or two.
Character counts use Unicode code points, so emoji outside the basic multilingual plane count as one character. A visible character made from multiple code points, such as a letter plus a combining accent mark, can still count as more than one. Input stays in the browser and is not uploaded.
The reading-time estimate divides the detected word count by your words-per-minute setting, with a supported range of 50 to 1,000 words per minute.
